More than 7,000 people are invited to take part in a second international Plastic Pick-Up Day to mark UN World Ocean Day on Thursday, 8 June 2023.
The initiative was created by Azets, the international outsourcing, compliance, and advisory group, via its charity Azets 4 Kids, in partnership with international non-profit organisation Plastic Oceans Europe (POE).
Launched in 2022, it is the second annual pick-up which encourages people to volunteer one hour to help clear their local area of plastic pollution.
Colleagues, clients and communities across Azets’ network of 189 offices in Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Ireland, Norway, Romania, Sweden, and the UK are invited to join the Plastic Pick-up Day. The Group employs more than 7,600 people.
Azets 4 Kids was founded in 2019 to provide children with the tools and resources they need to create a brighter future for planet Earth.
POE is an international non-profit organisation dedicated to ending plastic pollution and fostering sustainable communities worldwide.
Through programs in education, activism, advocacy and science, POE works to inspire changes in consumer behaviour, corporate practices, and public policy.
POE is providing Azets 4 Kids with guidance in organising the Azets Plastic Pick-Up Day, as well as valuable insights into plastic pollution and tips on how Azets can become a more sustainable business.
Of the 380 million tons of plastic produced each year globally, reports indicate that up to 50% is for single-use purposes.
It’s estimated that more than 10 million tons of plastic is dumped into our oceans every year, with severe long-term impacts on marine wildlife and the environment.
Chris Horne, Azets Group CEO, said: “We encourage our people to immerse themselves in our purpose – to improve the lives of our colleagues, clients and communities, in a sustainable way – every day, in all they do. Last year, our first annual Plastic Pick-up Day saw participation across our entire group, helping to reduce and avoid plastic pollution, and I’m delighted to launch the 2023 Plastic Pick-Up Day to mark UN World Ocean Day.
“Through our charity, Azets 4 Kids, we are helping to create positive futures for young people across Europe, with a focus on combatting the devastating effects of climate change and environmental degradation. Our partnership with Plastic Oceans Europe shines a light on the importance of ocean conservation and sustainable consumption, while demonstrating Azets’ commitment to sustainability.”
Andrea Torres Saa, Regional Director of POE, said: "We are excited to once again be working in partnership with Azets 4 Kids for this second annual Plastic Pick-Up Day. Education is one of our main pillars and we are happy to share this value with Azets, as we believe that through education of future generations, we are planting seeds to change the world."
